The Ultimate 3D Printing Calibration Guide: Bed Leveling, E-Steps & First Layer Adhesion

90% of failed FDM prints can be traced back to incorrect first-layer squish, uncalibrated extruder rotation distance (E-steps), or improper bed surface hygiene. This master checklist ensures flawless print adhesion across PLA, PETG, ABS, and TPU.

1. The Bed Tramming (Leveling) Protocol

  • Clean your PEI build plate with isopropyl alcohol (IPA 99%) or warm water and dish soap. Never touch the print surface with bare fingers!
  • Heat the bed to working temperature (60°C for PLA) before leveling to account for thermal expansion of the aluminum heat bed.
  • Adjust bed screws with a standard 0.10mm receipt paper until slight friction is felt under all four corners.
